Statistics Canada has announced plans to cut 850 jobs over the next two years, including an immediate staff reduction of 100 positions.
The federal statistics agency confirmed that it plans to reduce its total headcount by 2028, including 12% of its executive ranks.
Statistics Canada is responsible for issuing data on the Canadian economy, including the Labour Force Survey, gross domestic product (GDP), retail sales, and trade balance.
The cuts at the Ottawa-based agency come as the federal government moves to eliminate thousands of public sector jobs in an effort to cut costs and save money.
Following the immediate 100 job cuts, Statistics Canada said the remaining 750 job reductions will come from a pool of approximately 3,200 employees.
Statistics Canada had a total of 7,274 employees at the end of 2025, up from 5,452 in 2019.
Management at Statistics Canada said they will lean on voluntary departures and early retirement packages to lessen the impact of the workforce reductions.
The Liberal government of Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that it wants to reduce the size of the federal public service from 367,772 employees to 330,000 by 2028-29.
The most recent federal budget outlined a plan to cut 28,000 jobs from the federal public service and achieve $60 billion in cost savings by 2029.
