TSX Gains at Outset

Equity markets in Canada moved higher on Wednesday, supported by higher gold prices, while investor attention centered on Nvidia's quarterly earnings due after the U.S. markets close.

The TSX recovered 174.13 points to 30,210.59

The Canadian dollar eked ahead 0.13 cents to 71.37 cents U.S.

Bank of Canada Deputy Governor Nicolas Vincent is set to speak later in the day, potentially offering clues on the country's policy path.

In corporate news, JPMorgan raised the price target on business jet maker Bombardier to $215 from $170. Bombardier surged $3.71, or 1.7%, to $217.16.

Cenovus Energy announced a $1.6-billion offering of senior notes. Cenovus settled 49 cents, or 1.9%, to $25.40.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange popped 17.18 points, or 2%, to 884.88.

Seven of the 12 TSX subgroups were in the green, with gold and information technology each climbing 2.9%, and materials up 2.3%.

The five laggards were weighed most by energy, doffing 1.5%, consumer staples, sliding 0.6%, and telecoms, off 0.5%.

ON WALLSTREET

Shares began the long road upward Wednesday after heavy losses the day before. The Dow Jones Industrials index recouped 165.05 points, to 46,256.79.

The S&P 500 jumped 68.55 points, or 1%, to 6,685.87.

The NASDAQ hiked 369.87 points to 22,802.73.

Prices for the 10-year Treasury edged up slightly, lowering yields to 4.13% from Tuesday’s 4.12%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices slid $1.68 to $59.06 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices leaped $58.30 to $4,124.80 U.S. an ounce.
