Hang Seng Stung by Trump Tariffs, Drops 2%-Plus

Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed Tuesday as investors assessed U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 regained 172.05 points, or 0.5%, to 37,780.54.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index stumbled 561.31 points, or 2.4%, to 23,344,25.

Australian stocks broke even. The country’s budget will be tabled by Treasurer Jim Chalmers at 7.30 p.m. Australian Eastern Daylight Time.

In other markets

The CSI 300 in mainland China dipped 2,15 points, or 0.1% to 3,932.30.

In Taiwan, the Taiex index recouped 166.55 points, or 0.8%, to 22,273.19.

In Singapore, the Straits Times index added 18.2 points, or 0.5%, to 3,954.53

In Korea, the Kospi dropped 16.26 points, or 0.6%, to 2,615.81

In New Zealand, the NZX 50 gained 56.3 points, or 0.5%, to 12,184.51.

In Australia, the ASX 200 moved forward 5.57 points, or 0.1%, to 7,942.46.
