Asia Mostly Higher Amid Trade Thaw

Asia markets rose after Wall Street gained for a third straight day as tech stocks rallied, with investors assessing the trade climate as the U.S. tones down tariff rhetoric and China reportedly mulls suspending tariffs.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 spiked 666.59 points, or 1.9%, to 35,705.74

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index recovered 70.98 points, or 0.3%, to 21,980.74. Korean markets are ahead as that country also reportedly inches closer to striking a trade deal with the U.S.

CHINA

The CSI 300 in mainland China regained 2.63 points, or 0.1%, to 3,786.98.

China may waive its 125% tariff on certain U.S. goods, Bloomberg reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

In other markets

In Singapore, the Straits Times Index eked back 8.14 points, or 0.2%, to 3,823.78

In Korea, the Kospi poked ahead 23.97 points, or 1%, to 2,546.30

In Taiwan, the Taiex leaped 393.92 points, or 2%, to 19,872.73

Markets in Australia and New Zealand were closed for ANZAC Day.
